Programming your voice is a bit like making a multi-layered cake. Voicing is the next layer.

Voice quality is defined as the manner of vibration of your vocal folds. Your vocal folds are two shelves of muscles, which lie perpendicular to your windpipe. The positive air pressure, which flows outward from your lungs, sets the vocal folds into vibration. The sound of your voice is a direct result (in part) of whether your vocal folds vibrate symmetrically or not.

A smooth, clear vocal tone is usually the result of symmetric vibration. A scratchy, hoarse voice usually occurs when the vocal folds vibrate in an asymmetric pattern. And a breathy voice is produced when there is a gap between the two vocal folds as they vibrate.
