Kelley Winters chats with Kathe Perez about medical diagnoses and standards of care affecting transgender people.

Some of the biggest news on the horizon for transgende and gender non-comforming people is that in 2017, The World Health Organization (WHO) will replace trans-related mental disorder codings with new non-psychiatric Gender Incongruence codings in a new chapter on sexual health. These would effectively obsolete the mental disorder classifications in the DSM-5 and ICD-10 for trans people accessing hormonal and/or surgical transition care.

Kelley Winters, Ph.D. is the author of Gender Madness in American Psychiatry: Essays from the Struggle for Dignity and a community advocate on issues of transgender medical policy. She is the founder of GID Reform Advocates, a member of the International Advisory Group for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care and an Advisory Board Member for TransYouth Family Allies. Kelley has presented papers on the psychiatric classification of gender diversity at annual conventions of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association and the Association of Women in Psychology. Her articles have appeared in a number of mental health journals and in two books. Kelley enjoys biking, hiking and landscape photography.
