Is being transgender / transsexual a mental illness or a choice? Additionally, does being trans contribute to mental disorders? It certainly can. Major depression or body dysmorphic disorder is not uncommon, but it could also contribute to bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and/or perhaps even dissociative identity disorder (DID) / multiple personality disorder (MPD).
